Smoking with Braces - Biermann Orthodontics

Does Smoking Cause Stains on Teeth with Braces

February 3, 2015/in Caring For Your Braces, Living With Braces

We all know that smoking cigarettes and tobacco can be extremely harmful to our health in a variety of different ways. Many people associate smoking with conditions that affect our lungs but they do not consider oral health is one of the major health concerns associated with smoking is well.

When people receive braces it’s very important that they continue to maintain their oral health as well as regularly attend dental visits for checkups in cleaning. If a person has braces and continues to smoke they also work to detriment their oral health even further and can risk severely staining their teeth and having them not recover their original clean and white exterior when orthodontic appliances have been removed.

Smoking can reduce someone’s ability to fight off tooth decay by making someone’s mouth much more prone to plaque and extra toxins that are ingested through smoking. Smoking cigarettes and tobacco can actually cause major damage to the bones in your mouth as well as your gums. Regularly smoking while you have orthodontic appliances on will only add to these concerns. If you are committed to having a healthier mouth and to really straightening your smile you should really also consider giving up smoking so that you can hold onto your perfectly straight and healthy smile and maintain your overall oral health.

If you are willing to quit smoking when you receive your braces you can experience a number of great health benefits and severely reduce your risk of oral health issues that are associated with smoking.

Making a commitment to straighten your teeth should also involve an overall commitment to improving your oral health. Much of the damage that smoking may have done inside your mouth is completely reversible if you are willing to abstain from smoking entirely. If you’re willing to quit smoking for even just a few months you will find an overall increase in your lung function, a greatly reduced risk of oral health issues such as gum disease and more. If you keep up smoke-free habits after your treatment for up to five years you can reduce the risk of cancer in your mouth which is another major concern in oral health issues for smokers.
